Bio

Carl Davis (1936–2023) was a British-American conductor and composer renowned for his orchestral scores for film, television, and ballet. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he moved to the United Kingdom in the 1960s, where he became a leading figure in British music, particularly noted for his work with the London Symphony Orchestra and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Davis composed acclaimed scores for silent films, including restorations of classics such as Napoleon, The Thief of Bagdad, and Ben-Hur, often performed live with full orchestra. His television work included the iconic theme for the BBC series The World at War, as well as music for productions like Pride and Prejudice and The French Lieutenant’s Woman. In addition to his film and television work, Davis wrote concert works, ballets, and chamber music, and was active as a conductor throughout his career. He received numerous awards for his contributions to music and film, and his legacy continues through recordings and performances of his compositions.
