Kishore Kumar (1929–1987) was an Indian playback singer, actor, composer, and lyricist whose voice defined several decades of Hindi cinema. Born in Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh, he began his career in the late 1940s and rose to prominence in the 1950s with songs that blended classical, folk, and Western influences. Over a career spanning four decades, he recorded thousands of songs across Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, and other languages, working with composers such as S. D. Burman, R. D. Burman, and Laxmikant–Pyarelal. His versatility allowed him to perform romantic ballads, energetic dance numbers, and comic tracks with equal ease. Beyond singing, Kumar acted in numerous films and composed music for several of his own productions. His distinctive voice and improvisational style left a lasting impact on Indian popular music, and his recordings continue to be widely played and studied today.
