Bio

Christa Päffgen, known professionally as Nico, was a German singer, fashion model, and actress born in Cologne in 1938. She first gained prominence as a model in the 1950s before transitioning to music, becoming a key figure in the New York underground scene through her collaborations with The Velvet Underground and her solo work. Nico's distinctive contralto voice and minimalist style defined her recordings, most notably her 1967 debut album Chelsea Girl and subsequent releases like The Marble Index and Desertshore. Her music blended art rock and proto-punk elements, influencing generations of musicians with its stark, atmospheric quality. She continued recording and performing until her death in 1988, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most enigmatic figures in 20th-century music.
