Bio
Walter Gieseking was a German pianist born in 1895 in Lyon, France, and raised in Germany. He became one of the leading interpreters of French Impressionist repertoire, particularly Debussy and Ravel, during the first half of the twentieth century. Gieseking was known for his exceptional tonal control, wide dynamic range, and ability to perform complex works from memory after minimal practice. He recorded extensively for Columbia Records and gave acclaimed recitals across Europe and the United States. His interpretations of Beethoven, Mozart, and the complete piano works of Debussy remain benchmarks. Gieseking continued performing until his death in 1956.
