Bio

Édouard Lalo (1823–1892) was a French composer whose works bridged the late-Romantic and early-Impressionist eras. Born in Lille, he studied violin and composition at the Paris Conservatoire before establishing himself as a chamber-music performer and teacher. His reputation rests chiefly on the Symphonie espagnole for violin and orchestra and the Cello Concerto in D minor, both of which remain staples of the solo repertoire. Lalo also composed operas, notably Le Roi d’Ys, and contributed significantly to French chamber music with his string quartets and piano trios.
