Bio
Howard Ashman (1950–1991) was an American lyricist, playwright, and director best known for his work on Disney animated musicals. Born in Baltimore, he co-wrote the stage musical Little Shop of Horrors and later collaborated with composer Alan Menken on The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin. His lyrics helped revive the Disney animated musical format in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Ashman died of AIDS-related complications in 1991, shortly after completing work on Beauty and the Beast.
