David Sylvian (born 23 February 1958) is an English singer-songwriter, musician and composer. He first rose to prominence as the lead vocalist, keyboardist and main songwriter of the new wave band Japan, which achieved commercial success in the late 1970s and early 1980s with albums such as Gentlemen Take Polaroids and Tin Drum. After the group disbanded in 1982, Sylvian embarked on a solo career that blended art pop, ambient and experimental elements. His debut album Brilliant Trees (1984) and subsequent releases like Secrets of the Beehive (1987) established him as a distinctive voice in alternative music, noted for his introspective lyrics and atmospheric arrangements. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Sylvian continued to explore diverse musical territories through solo work and collaborations with artists such as Ryuichi Sakamoto, Holger Czukay and Robert Fripp. His catalogue spans art rock, ambient and avant-garde styles, reflecting a consistent commitment to artistic reinvention.
