Bio
Mel Tormé (1925–1999) was an American singer, songwriter, drummer, and actor celebrated for his smooth baritone and impeccable phrasing, earning him the nickname “The Velvet Fog.” Born in Chicago, he began performing as a child and rose to prominence in the 1940s with big-band and vocal-jazz recordings that showcased both his technical skill and warm interpretive style. Beyond singing, Tormé composed numerous standards, including the enduring holiday classic “The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire).” He remained active through the 1990s, collaborating with jazz luminaries and maintaining a devoted following for his sophisticated vocal artistry.
