Herbie Hancock is an American jazz pianist, keyboardist, bandleader and composer born in Chicago in 1940. He rose to prominence in the early 1960s with Miles Davis’s Second Great Quintet, contributing to landmark albums including "E.S.P." and "Nefertiti". Hancock’s solo breakthrough came with the 1960s Blue Note recordings "Empyrean Isles" and "Maiden Voyage", followed by the funk-jazz fusion classic "Head Hunters" (1973). He has explored acoustic post-bop, electric fusion, electro-funk and hip-hop collaborations, winning 14 Grammy Awards and an Oscar for the score to "Round Midnight". Hancock continues to perform and record, serving as a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador and chair of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz.
