Václav Neumann

Václav Neumann (1920–1995) was a Czech conductor and violist who became one of the leading figures in post-war Czech musical life. He studied at the Prague Conservatory and began his career as a violist in the Czech Philharmonic before turning to conducting. From 1968 to 1990 he served as chief conductor of the Czech Philharmonic, shaping its distinctive sound and championing both the core Czech repertoire and 20th-century works. Neumann was also active internationally, holding posts with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and the Stuttgart State Opera. His recordings, especially of Dvořák, Smetana, and Janáček, remain benchmarks for their clarity and idiomatic phrasing. He was known for his precise baton technique and for fostering a warm, singing tone in the orchestras he led.
