Solomon Burke (1940–2010) was an American singer-songwriter whose powerful voice and charismatic stage presence earned him the nickname "King of Rock and Soul." Born in Philadelphia, he began his career as a child preacher and gospel singer before transitioning to secular R&B in the late 1950s. Burke became a cornerstone of Atlantic Records in the 1960s, scoring hits such as "Cry to Me," "If You Need Me," and "Got to Get You Off My Mind." His blend of gospel fervor, country storytelling, and deep soul helped shape the emerging genre of soul music and influenced countless artists who followed. In 2001 he received a Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album for *Don't Give Up on Me*, and he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, cementing his legacy as one of soul music’s most enduring figures.
