Héctor Juan Pérez Martínez (30 September 1946 – 4 June 1993), known professionally as Héctor Lavoe, was a Puerto Rican salsa singer whose voice defined the genre’s golden era. Born in Ponce, he moved to New York City in 1963 and quickly became the lead vocalist for Willie Colón’s orchestra, helping to shape the sound of salsa dura with hits such as “El Malo” and “Canto a Borinquen.” Lavoe later launched a solo career, releasing acclaimed albums like “La Voz” (1975) and “De Ti Depende” (1976) that showcased his interpretive range across salsa, bolero, and son cubano. Despite struggles with addiction and personal tragedy, his emotive phrasing and improvisational skill earned him the enduring nickname “El Cantante de los Cantantes.”
