Osbourne Ruddock, known professionally as King Tubby, was a Jamaican sound engineer and producer who became one of the most influential figures in the development of dub music. Born in Kingston in 1941, he began his career repairing and building sound systems before moving into studio work at Duke Reid's Treasure Isle studio. In the early 1970s, Tubby pioneered the use of studio mixing boards as instruments, creating the foundational techniques of dub by stripping down reggae tracks to their rhythm sections and adding heavy echo, reverb, and other effects. His work with artists like Augustus Pablo, Johnny Clarke, and Linval Thompson helped define the sound of roots reggae and dub throughout the decade. Tubby's Waterhouse studio became a hub for reggae production, and his innovative approach to remixing influenced generations of producers worldwide. He continued working until his death in 1989, leaving behind a legacy that extends far beyond reggae into hip-hop, electronic music, and countless other genres.
