Luciano Berio (1925–2003) was an Italian composer whose work bridged serialism, electroacoustic experimentation, and theatrical innovation. He co-founded the Studio di Fonologia Musicale in Milan, where he explored tape manipulation and live electronics, and later taught at major institutions including Juilliard and Harvard. His catalogue ranges from the virtuosic solo vocal cycle Folk Songs to the monumental Sinfonia for orchestra and eight amplified voices, which weaves literary quotations with modernist collage techniques. Berio’s Sequenza series redefined instrumental technique for solo performers, while his interest in re-composition is evident in works such as Rendering, based on Schubert’s sketches. Throughout his career he collaborated with leading performers—among them Cathy Berberian, to whom many pieces were dedicated—and maintained an active role in festival programming and electronic-music research until his death in Rome.
