Bio

Michael Praetorius (1571–1621) was a German composer, organist, and music theorist of the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods. Born in Creuzburg, he served at the court of Duke Heinrich Julius of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, where he composed sacred and secular works and oversaw musical performances. His most famous publication, the three-volume Syntagma musicum (1614–1620), remains a vital source on 17th-century musical practice and instruments. Among his compositions, the collection Terpsichore (1612) preserves over 300 dance tunes, while his numerous Lutheran hymn settings and polychoral motets helped shape Protestant church music in Germany. Praetorius’s cosmopolitan style blended German traditions with Italian and French influences, and his theoretical writings and editions contributed significantly to the transition from Renaissance to Baroque aesthetics.
