Pharoah Sanders was an American jazz saxophonist whose career spanned more than five decades. Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1940, he moved to New York in the early 1960s and quickly became a central figure in the city’s avant-garde jazz scene. He first gained wide recognition through his work with John Coltrane, appearing on landmark albums such as "Ascension" and "Meditations." After Coltrane’s death, Sanders led his own groups and recorded extensively for Impulse! Records. His music blended free-jazz intensity with modal and spiritual elements, often incorporating African and Asian influences. Signature works such as "Karma" (1969) and "Thembi" (1971) established him as a leading voice in post-Coltrane jazz. Sanders continued to perform and record into the 21st century, collaborating with artists across genres and receiving a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2016. He died in 2022, leaving a catalog that remains influential in both jazz and experimental music circles.
