Waldir Azevedo (1923–1980) was a Brazilian choro composer, guitarist, and bandleader from Rio de Janeiro. He became one of the leading figures of the genre in the mid-20th century, writing numerous instrumental pieces that remain staples of the choro repertoire. His best-known work, the 1947 choro “Brasileirinho,” achieved international popularity and has been recorded by countless artists. Azevedo’s compositions blend the rhythmic drive of samba with the melodic elegance of seresta, helping to keep choro vibrant during the rise of bossa nova and other styles. Throughout his career he led his own ensembles, performed widely in Brazil and abroad, and left a substantial catalog of recordings that continue to influence contemporary choro musicians.
