Glenn Miller was an American big band leader, arranger, and trombonist whose orchestra became one of the most popular and influential ensembles of the swing era. Known for hits such as "In the Mood," "Moonlight Serenade," and "Tuxedo Junction," Miller developed a distinctive reed-heavy sound that defined the era's dance music. His recordings dominated the charts in the late 1930s and early 1940s, and his orchestra's radio broadcasts reached millions of listeners worldwide. During World War II, Miller volunteered for military service and led the Army Air Forces Band, performing for Allied troops across Europe. His disappearance over the English Channel in December 1944 cut short a career that had already secured his place in American popular music history. Miller's arrangements and recordings continue to be studied and performed by jazz and swing ensembles today.
