Irene Cara (March 18, 1959 – November 25, 2022) was an American singer, songwriter, and actress. She rose to prominence in the early 1980s with her performances in the films Fame (1980) and Flashdance (1983), both of which produced hit title songs that she performed. Cara’s single “Fame” reached the top five on the Billboard Hot 100, and “Flashdance… What a Feeling” topped the chart and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1984. She continued to record and act through the 1980s and 1990s, releasing albums such as Anyone Can See (1982) and What a Feelin’ (1983).
