Richard Thompson (born 3 April 1949) is an English singer, songwriter and guitarist. He first gained prominence as a founding member of the folk-rock group Fairport Convention, contributing to their early albums before leaving in 1971. Since then he has maintained a long solo career, releasing numerous studio albums that blend traditional British folk with rock, electric guitar and literate songwriting. His work is noted for its dark humour, historical themes and distinctive guitar style, and he remains an influential figure in British folk and roots music.
