Tommy McCook

Bio

Tommy McCook (3 March 1927 – 5 May 1998) was a Jamaican saxophonist and bandleader who played a central role in the island’s post-war music scene. Born in Havana, Cuba, he grew up in Kingston and became one of the first musicians to record ska in the early 1960s as a founding member of the Skatalites. His tenor-saxophone style, rooted in jazz and Caribbean rhythms, later shaped the transition from ska to rocksteady and reggae. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s McCook led the Supersonics, the house band for Treasure Isle Records, and contributed to countless hits by artists such as Alton Ellis, Phyllis Dillon and Delroy Wilson. He also recorded extensively as a session musician for producers including Duke Reid and Bunny Lee, helping define the instrumental sound of dub and roots reggae. McCook’s work remains a cornerstone of Jamaican popular music.
