Bio
Franz Benda (1709–1786) was a Bohemian violinist and composer active in the mid-18th century. Born in Mladá Boleslav, he became a leading figure at the Prussian court in Potsdam, where he served as concertmaster to Frederick the Great. His compositions include numerous violin concertos, sonatas, and symphonies that reflect the transition from late Baroque to early Classical style. Benda’s works are noted for their expressive melodies and idiomatic writing for the violin.
