Bio
Joel Cohen is an American early-music specialist and conductor known for his work with medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque repertoires. He founded the Boston Camerata in 1954 and served as its music director for many years, shaping its distinctive historically-informed approach. Cohen has also directed the Camerata Mediterranea, focusing on medieval music of the Mediterranean region, and has collaborated with numerous European early-music ensembles. His recordings for Erato and other labels helped bring lesser-known medieval and Renaissance works to wider audiences. He is recognized for his scholarly editions, performances on period instruments, and efforts to present early music with both authenticity and expressive vitality.
