Bio
Charlie Byrd was an American jazz guitarist born in Suffolk, Virginia, in 1925. He studied classical guitar in Europe and became known for blending bossa nova with jazz after a 1961 tour of Brazil. His landmark 1962 album Jazz Samba with Stan Getz helped popularize bossa nova in the United States. Byrd recorded extensively for Riverside and Columbia, performing both solo and with his trio. He remained active until his death in 1999, leaving a legacy as one of the first American guitarists to champion Brazilian rhythms.
