Maurice Duruflé

Maurice Duruflé (1902–1986) was a French composer and organist whose music fused the modal language of Gregorian chant with the harmonic palette of French Impressionism. Trained at the Paris Conservatoire and later serving as organist at Saint-Étienne-du-Mont, he produced a small but influential catalogue dominated by choral and organ works. His Requiem, Op. 9, remains his most widely performed piece, celebrated for its luminous textures and serene spirituality. Duruflé’s meticulous craftsmanship and deep liturgical roots have secured him a lasting place in twentieth-century sacred music.
