Bio

The Supremes were an American female singing group formed in Detroit in 1961. Originally known as the Primettes, the lineup that achieved fame consisted of Diana Ross, Mary Wilson, and Florence Ballard. They became the most successful act of Motown Records during the 1960s, scoring twelve number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100, including "Where Did Our Love Go," "Baby Love," and "Stop! In the Name of Love." Their polished image and crossover appeal helped break racial barriers in popular music, making them one of the first Black groups to achieve consistent mainstream success. After Ballard left in 1967, Cindy Birdsong joined, and the group continued recording under the name Diana Ross & the Supremes before Ross departed for a solo career in 1970. The Supremes were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.
