Bill Callahan is an American singer-songwriter born in Silver Spring, Maryland, in 1966. He first gained recognition in the 1990s under the name Smog, releasing a series of lo-fi, introspective albums that helped define the slowcore and alt-country scenes. Over time his work evolved toward clearer production and more direct songwriting while retaining a dry, observational lyric style. Since the mid-2000s he has recorded under his own name, issuing albums such as Sometimes I Wish We Were an Eagle (2009) and Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest (2019). His music often explores themes of solitude, relationships, and the American landscape, delivered in a deep, measured baritone.
