Bio

Dave Brubeck was an American jazz pianist and composer whose quartet helped popularize cool jazz and complex time signatures in the 1950s and 1960s. Born in Concord, California, he studied under Darius Milhaud and formed the Dave Brubeck Quartet with Paul Desmond, whose alto saxophone defined the group’s sound. Their 1959 album Time Out featured the hit “Take Five,” the first million-selling jazz single and a landmark in odd-meter composition. Brubeck toured extensively, collaborated with musicians such as Gerry Mulligan and his sons in later decades, and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. His work blended classical influences with swing and modal improvisation, influencing generations of jazz artists.
