Nina Simone (1933–2003) was an American singer, pianist, and songwriter whose work fused jazz, soul, and classical influences. Born Eunice Kathleen Waymon in Tryon, North Carolina, she trained as a classical pianist before moving to Atlantic City and later New York, where she began performing in clubs and adopted her stage name. Her 1958 recording of “I Loves You, Porgy” brought national attention, followed by signature songs such as “My Baby Just Cares for Me,” “Feeling Good,” and “Mississippi Goddam.” Simone’s repertoire ranged from standards and spirituals to socially charged material that reflected the civil-rights era. Beyond her recordings, she was known for her commanding stage presence and distinctive contralto voice. Her catalog continues to influence artists across jazz, soul, and popular music.
