Champion Jack Dupree was an American blues pianist, singer, and songwriter born in New Orleans in 1910. He became known for his boogie-woogie piano style and his gritty, storytelling vocals that often reflected his early life experiences, including time spent in an orphanage and as a professional boxer. After World War II, Dupree moved to Europe, eventually settling in Germany, where he continued to record and perform until his death in 1992. His work bridged traditional New Orleans blues with later electric styles, and he remained an influential figure in the preservation of classic blues piano traditions throughout his career.
