Gladys Knight & The Pips formed in Atlanta in 1953 as a family group that blended gospel roots with emerging soul sounds. The quartet—Gladys Knight, her brother Merald, and cousins William and Edward Patten—quickly became known for Knight’s powerful, emotive vocals and tight harmonies. After early singles on small labels, they signed with Motown in 1966, scoring hits such as “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” and “Neither One of Us.” Later moving to Buddah Records, they delivered classics like “Midnight Train to Georgia,” cementing their status as one of soul music’s most enduring acts. The group’s run ended with the Pips’ retirement in 1989, though Knight continued a successful solo career. Their catalog remains a cornerstone of classic and northern soul playlists worldwide.
