Bio

Booker T. & the M.G.'s were an American instrumental R&B/funk band formed in Memphis, Tennessee in 1962. The original lineup consisted of Booker T. Jones on organ, Steve Cropper on guitar, Lewie Steinberg on bass, and Al Jackson Jr. on drums. They are best known for their 1962 hit "Green Onions" and for serving as the house band for Stax Records, backing artists such as Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, and Sam & Dave. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1992 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. Their tight, groove-oriented playing helped define the Memphis soul sound of the 1960s and 1970s. The band continued recording and performing with various lineup changes until the death of drummer Al Jackson Jr. in 1975, with later reunions featuring new members.
