Jules Massenet was a French composer of the Romantic era, born in 1842 in Montaud, near Saint-Étienne. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire and won the Prix de Rome in 1863. Massenet became one of the most successful opera composers of his time, with works such as Manon, Werther, and Thaïs achieving international acclaim. His style is characterized by lyrical melodies, elegant orchestration, and a blend of French and Italian influences. He taught composition at the Paris Conservatoire, influencing a generation of French musicians including Gustave Charpentier and Reynaldo Hahn. Massenet composed over thirty operas along with ballets, oratorios, and orchestral suites, remaining a central figure in late nineteenth-century French music.
