Ronald Binge

Ronald Binge (1910–1979) was an English composer and arranger best known for his light orchestral music. Born in Derby, he studied composition under Haydn Wood and later worked as an arranger for the BBC and for several prominent British dance orchestras. His most enduring work, "Elizabethan Serenade," became an international hit in the 1950s and remains a staple of light-music repertoire. Other well-known pieces include "Sailing By" (used by the BBC as the theme for its late-night shipping forecast) and the "Miss Melanie" intermezzo. Binge’s style is characterized by graceful melodies, transparent scoring, and a distinctly English pastoral charm. He continued to compose and arrange until his death in 1979, leaving a catalogue that still features regularly in concert programmes and recordings.
