Francis Lai

Bio

Francis Lai (1932–2018) was a French composer and accordionist best known for his film scores. Born in Nice, he began his career playing accordion in local bands before moving to Paris, where he collaborated with singer Édith Piaf and other prominent artists. Lai gained international recognition with his score for the 1966 film A Man and a Woman, which earned him an Academy Award for Best Original Score. He went on to compose music for more than 100 films, including Love Story (1970), for which he received a second Oscar nomination and a Grammy Award. His melodic, romantic style became a hallmark of French cinema soundtracks throughout the 1960s and 1970s, and his work continues to be celebrated for its emotional depth and lyrical beauty.
