Eumir Deodato is a Brazilian pianist, composer, and arranger born in Rio de Janeiro in 1943. He is best known for his jazz-funk and jazz-fusion work, particularly the instrumental hit "Also Sprach Zarathustra (2001)," which reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in 1973. Deodato began his career in Brazil, collaborating with artists such as Marcos Valle and Milton Nascimento before moving to the United States in the late 1960s. There he worked as an arranger and producer for artists including Frank Sinatra, Wes Montgomery, and Kool & the Gang, while also releasing his own albums on the CTI label. His style blends Brazilian rhythms with jazz harmony and funk grooves, making him a key figure in the jazz-funk movement of the 1970s. He continues to compose, arrange, and perform internationally.
