Pérez Prado (1916–1989) was a Cuban bandleader, pianist, organist, and composer who became the leading figure of the mambo craze that swept Latin America and the United States in the late 1940s and 1950s. Born Dámaso Pérez Prado in Matanzas, he began his career playing piano in local bands before moving to Havana, where he developed his signature big-band sound that fused Afro-Cuban rhythms with jazz harmonies. After relocating to Mexico City in 1949, Prado assembled an orchestra whose recordings—most notably “Mambo No. 5” and “Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White”—topped charts worldwide and introduced the mambo to mainstream audiences. His flamboyant conducting style, punctuated by trademark grunts, helped make him one of the first Latin artists to achieve international stardom. Prado’s influence extended beyond the dance floor; his arrangements shaped the sound of subsequent Latin genres and earned him the enduring nickname “El Rey del Mambo.”
