Federico Mompou

Bio

Federico Mompou (1893–1987) was a Catalan composer and pianist whose music is noted for its intimate, introspective character and sparse textures. Born in Barcelona, he studied at the Conservatori Superior de Música del Liceu before moving to Paris, where he absorbed the influence of the French Impressionists, particularly Erik Satie. Returning to Barcelona in 1941, Mompou devoted himself almost exclusively to composition, producing a body of work centered on solo piano pieces such as the four-volume Música callada and the Cançons i danses. His style blends Catalan folk elements with a refined economy of means, often marked by modal harmonies and a contemplative stillness. Although his output was modest in quantity, Mompou’s quiet lyricism has secured a lasting place in the modern piano repertoire, admired by pianists and audiences seeking an alternative to the denser textures of late-Romanticism.
