The Clash

The Clash formed in London in 1976 and became one of the most influential bands of the British punk movement. Their early recordings combined raw punk energy with reggae, rockabilly, and ska influences, and they quickly gained attention for politically charged lyrics and a fiercely independent stance. Over the next decade the group released a string of critically acclaimed albums, including the double-LP London Calling and the sprawling Sandinista!, both of which expanded punk’s musical boundaries while maintaining a confrontational attitude toward social and political issues. The Clash disbanded in 1986 after several lineup changes and internal tensions, but their catalog continues to be regarded as a cornerstone of punk and alternative rock.
