Kino was a Soviet rock band formed in Leningrad in 1981. Led by singer-songwriter Viktor Tsoi, the group became one of the most influential acts in Russian rock music during the 1980s. Their minimalist post-punk and cold-wave sound, combined with introspective lyrics, resonated widely across the USSR. The band released several seminal albums, including "45" (1982), "Nachalnik Kamchatki" (1984), and the breakthrough "Gruppa krovi" (1988). Kino’s popularity surged during the perestroika years, culminating in large-scale concerts and the 1990 documentary "The Last Hero." Viktor Tsoi’s death in a car accident in August 1990 effectively ended the band. Despite their short career, Kino’s music remains an enduring cultural touchstone in Russia and other post-Soviet states.
