R. D. Burman, born Rahul Dev Burman on 27 June 1939 in Kolkata, was one of the most influential music directors in Indian cinema. He composed for over 300 films, blending Indian classical traditions with Western rock, jazz, and pop influences to create a distinctive sound that defined Bollywood music from the 1970s onward. The son of veteran composer S. D. Burman, he began his career assisting his father before making his debut as an independent music director with Chhote Nawab (1961). His innovative use of unusual instruments and rhythms earned him the nickname "Pancham," and he collaborated with leading playback singers such as Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle, and Lata Mangeshkar. Burman’s work spanned romantic ballads, energetic dance numbers, and experimental tracks, leaving a lasting impact on Hindi film music until his death on 4 January 1994.
