Lamberto Gardelli

Bio

Lamberto Gardelli (1915–1998) was an Italian conductor renowned for his work in opera. Born in Venice, he studied at the city's conservatory and began his career as a répétiteur at the Teatro Comunale in Florence before moving to Sweden, where he served as principal conductor of the Royal Swedish Opera from 1946 to 1955. Returning to Italy, Gardelli became a leading figure at La Scala and other major houses, later serving as music director of the Hungarian State Opera in Budapest. He was especially admired for his authoritative readings of Verdi and Puccini, and he made numerous acclaimed recordings for labels such as Decca and Philips.
