Bio

Sir Andrew Davis (1944–2024) was a British conductor, keyboardist, composer, and arranger whose career spanned more than five decades. He served as music director of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (1975–1988), chief conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra (1989–2000), and music director of the Lyric Opera of Chicago (2000–2021). Davis was knighted in 1992 for services to music and was widely admired for his interpretations of British and 20th-century repertoire. Beyond orchestral work, he conducted at leading opera houses including the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, the Metropolitan Opera, and the Bayreuth Festival. His recordings for Chandos, Teldec, and Naxos include complete cycles of Vaughan Williams, Elgar, and Holst, as well as acclaimed performances of contemporary composers. Davis also composed choral and orchestral works, notably the oratorio “The Last Acts of Christ” and numerous arrangements for chorus and orchestra.
