John Mayall (29 November 1933 – 23 July 2024) was an English blues musician whose work as a singer, multi-instrumentalist, and bandleader earned him the nickname “the Godfather of British Blues.” Born in Macclesfield, Cheshire, he formed the Bluesbreakers in 1963, creating a platform that launched the careers of Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Mick Taylor, and many other notable guitarists. Over a six-decade career, Mayall recorded dozens of albums that blended Chicago blues, rhythm-and-blues, and jazz influences, consistently championing both traditional and contemporary blues styles. His 1966 album “Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton” remains a landmark recording, while later projects such as “The Turning Point” and “Wake Up Call” showcased his evolving sound and enduring commitment to the genre.
