Bio
Derrick Morgan is a Jamaican singer, songwriter, and producer who helped shape the island’s early popular music. Emerging in the late 1950s, he recorded for producers such as Duke Reid and Leslie Kong, scoring ska and rocksteady hits including “Forward March,” “Tougher Than Tough,” and the duet “Housewives Choice” with Patsy Todd. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s Morgan moved fluidly between ska, rocksteady, and the emerging reggae styles, releasing dozens of singles on labels like Beverley’s and Trojan. His work as both performer and occasional producer influenced later generations of Jamaican artists while maintaining a presence on the UK sound-system circuit. Still active into the 21st century, Morgan is recognized as one of the foundational figures of Jamaican music, bridging the transition from mento and calypso to ska, rocksteady, and roots reggae.
