Paul Chambers

Bio

Paul Chambers was an American jazz double bassist born in Pittsburgh in 1935 and raised in Detroit. He rose to prominence in the mid-1950s as a member of Miles Davis’ First Great Quintet and later Sextet, appearing on landmark albums including Kind of Blue, Workin’, Steamin’, and Relaxin’. Chambers also recorded extensively with John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Sonny Rollins, and Wynton Kelly, establishing himself as one of the most sought-after bassists of the hard-bop era. His warm tone, impeccable time, and melodic walking lines became hallmarks of 1950s–60s modern jazz. He led a handful of sessions under his own name, notably the Blue Note albums Chambers’ Music and Bass on Top. Chambers died in New York in 1969 at age 33.
