Bio

Surinder Kaur (1929–2006) was a pioneering Indian playback singer whose career spanned more than five decades. Born in Lahore, she became one of the first women to record Punjabi folk songs for All India Radio after Partition, helping to popularize bhangra and Punjabi folk music across India and abroad. Her warm, earthy voice also lent itself to ghazal, qawwali, and Sufi genres, and she recorded hundreds of film and non-film songs in Punjabi, Hindi, and Urdu. Kaur received the Padma Shri in 2006, shortly before her death, in recognition of her contribution to Indian music.
