Delroy Wilson

Delroy Wilson (1948–1995) was a Jamaican singer who rose to prominence in the ska and rocksteady eras and remained a major figure through the roots-reggae period. Born in Kingston, he began recording as a teenager for producers such as Coxsone Dodd and became one of the island’s first child stars with hits like “Dancing Mood.” Throughout the 1970s and 1980s Wilson recorded for many of Jamaica’s leading producers, including Bunny Lee, Joe Gibbs, and Lloyd Charmers, scoring classics such as “Cool Operator,” “I’m Still Waiting,” and “Got a Date.” His smooth, emotive tenor made him a staple of both lovers-rock and roots-reggae playlists. Wilson’s influence extended beyond Jamaica; his work was frequently covered or sampled by later artists, and he remained active on the international touring circuit until his death in 1995.
