Carmen McRae was an American jazz singer, pianist, and composer whose career spanned five decades. Born in Harlem in 1920, she became known for her distinctive phrasing, interpretive depth, and understated vocal style that set her apart from many of her contemporaries. McRae began performing in New York clubs in the 1940s and gained wider recognition through recordings and collaborations with leading jazz musicians of the era.
