Papa Wemba

Papa Wemba (1949–2016) was a Congolese singer and musician who became one of the most influential figures in modern African popular music. Born in the Kasai-Oriental region of what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, he rose to prominence in the 1970s as a member of the band Zaïko Langa Langa before launching a successful solo career that blended traditional Congolese rumba with contemporary pop and world-music elements. Known for his distinctive high tenor voice and flamboyant stage presence, Wemba helped popularize the ndombolo and coupé-décalé styles while also championing the Sape movement, a Kinshasa-based fashion subculture. Over a career spanning more than four decades he released dozens of albums, collaborated with international artists, and performed at major festivals worldwide, cementing his reputation as the “King of Congolese Rumba.”
